Anderson and Field
Double In Red Cedar Main Event Marathon
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, May
1 - Ashley Anderson and Nick Field were both double feature winners
Friday night at the Red Cedar Speedway. A twenty six race, eleven
feature event night was triggered when rains hit the track last Friday
just at the completion of the qualifying events and last week's main
events, plus one hold over Pure Stock feature from a curfew shortened
night two weeks ago made for a full evening of racing. However, an early
start and a few events that were cut in length due to time limits
allowed the Red Cedar Racing Association to get the entire show
completed before the curfew time hit Friday.
Along with
Anderson and Field, other feature winners Friday included Ashley Husby,
Mile Anderson, Shane Halopka, Ben Hillman, Shawn Huse, Dean Yrjanainen,
and Mark Hessler.
Anderson who won
both the Late Model main events, started on the pole in the make up
feature and pulled away from the pack with ease, as he outdistanced John
Kaanta and Keith Foss for the win, made exciting as a late race oil leak
looked more serious for Anderson than it turned out. Feature race two
was much more challenging as Anderson started seventh on the grid and
was able to charge to the front using the second lane while most drivers
hugged the low side on the black, slick track. Joel Cryderman had
started on the pole and had built up nearly a
straightaway advantage, but when Anderson got into second, he cut the
lead quickly and caught Cryderman one lap past half way. He motored by
Joel on the high side and checked out on the field, leading Cryderman
and Steve Laursen home for the win.
Yrjanainen moved
up from the fifth starting spot in the Modified makeup feature to take
the lead and then held off a rapidly closing Craig Thatcher to take the
win. Behind Thatcher, Bryan Nayes had his best run of the year for
third. In the second feature race, Mark Hessler scored his first
Modified victory in quite some time as he started on the outside pole,
went to the cushion and drove a strong race for the win. Mike Anderson
and Thatcher moved into second and third but they were unable to cut
into Hessler's advantage.
Ben Hillman
brought a badly smoking Super Stock home for the win in their makeup
feature race, an event cut seriously short by a big turn one pileup that
took precious time to clean up. Despite the shortness of the race, there
was a good battle for the lead between Hillman and Steve Thomas, with
Hillman hanging on for the win. Paul Erikson rode home third in that
race. The second feature in the Supers saw Shawn Huse use Anderson's
line as he moved up the track and was able to drive by Mike Keller for
the win. Keller and Brad Johnson had battled in the early going until
Keller took the spot, but once Huse got moving in the high groove, he
drove around Keller for the win. Jason Forehand made a late charge to
take the third spot.
Mike Anderson is
still driving his brother's Midwest Modified and with a bold move from
the third row, he was able to drive into the lead on the opening lap and
take the makeup event. This race was shortened by multiple yellows, but
in the late going Anderson held off the pressure of Jim Bourn and Mark Gerth to take the win. Shane Halopka has been off to somewhat of a slow
start this Spring, but Friday he got things going in the second feature
race as he tracked down Mike Truscott for the win. Truscott started on
the pole and built up a solid lead in the nonstop main event, but
Halopka got moving at mid race and caught Truscott for the lead with
just a few laps left. Mark Gerth was also able to nip Truscott at the
end for second.
Nick Field had a
big night in the Pure Stocks as he also won two feature races. In the
race left over from two weeks ago, he started on the second row and out
battled Lucas Plank for the win with Ron Hoffman taking third. Tonight's
regularly scheduled main saw Field hold off a hard charge from Chaz
Ducommun and Plank. Sandwiched between those two races, the makeup
feature from last week saw twenty year old Ashley Husby win her first
ever feature race as he fought off all challenges from Field and
Ducommun for the win.
Next week things
return to a more normal format, with a regular show slated to start at 7
p.m. All five classes will be in action and the sponsor for the evening
will be Coke. It will be the Dukes of Hazard/Meet the Drivers Night and
the special event will be a Daisy Duke look alike contest.
