WI, June 5 - With three make up feature events to complete from
last Friday night’s rain shortened evening plus a another full
show for the five classes that compete regularly, it was a busy
night at the Red Cedar Speedway. However, no
complaints will be heard, particularly from Pure Stock driver
Nick Field who swept both the feature events he entered to
dominate the racing action. Other winners Friday included Mark
Gerth, Mike Keller, Cory Crapser, Mike Anderson, Steve Laursen
and Ashley Anderson.
Field got
to the front early in the make up feature event and then held
off a late charge from Chaz Ducommun for the win with rookie
Tony Falkner driving home third. Actually the scenario played
out much the same for both of the Pure Stock headliners. In the
regularly scheduled event, Field started in the front row, drove
off to a nice sized lead and then again, had to hold off a late
rush by Ducommun for the win. Falkner managed to come home third
again as the top three had identical finishes in both races. In
the make up event, Mike Harshman and Luke Plank rounded out
the top five with Ron Hoffman and Harshman completing the
second event in the top five.
The
Modified make up feature was one of the more exciting events of
the evening as front row starters Mark Hanson and Cory Crapser
raced side by side and nose to tail for most of the race. Hanson
got the early jump but Crapser rode his rear bumper for several
laps before dropping down a lane and pulling beside Hanson. Mark
rode the cushion and on each lap Crapser would edge to his
inside, but Hanson was able to beat Cory out of the corners each
time to maintain the lead. However, Crapser picked up the pace
and was able to pull up beside Hanson and with just a couple of
laps left, edged into the lead. Hanson was able to fight back
but Crapser held him off for the win with Mike Anderson, Ron
Schreiner and Luke Schilling next in line.
The
regularly scheduled Modified main saw Anderson dominate for the
win. Jay Richardson came from the second row to take the early
lead but Anderson got up on the cushion and blew past Richardson
for the lead. Once in front, Anderson pulled away from the pack.
Brent Prochnow had a nice run as he started ninth and worked his
way into second, and was actually catching Anderson at the end.
Mark Hessler also had a strong run as he took third ahead of
Richardson with Craig Thatcher slipping into the top five on the
last lap.
Laursen
led all the way to win the make up feature for the Late Models.
He got the early lead from Jake Redetzke, who spent most of the
event chasing but not catching Laursen , who hugged the low
groove from start to finish. Cory Mahder and Ashley Anderson
battled behind Redetzke, and when Jake bobbled on the front
chute, both blew by him to gain positions. Mahder got past
Anderson and closed on Laursen, but the wily veteran didn't make
any mistakes and Cory had to settle for second ahead of
Anderson. Redetzke recovered to settle for fourth ahead of Joel
Cryderman.
The second
Late Model feature was also one of the best races of the night.
Dave Cain got the jump on Jesse Redetzke and led most of the
race as the Modified star strove to earn his first ever Late
Model win. Cain worked the middle of the track as Mike Prochnow
moved into second and gradually began to close in on Cain. On
each corner, Prochnow would gain just a little and soon he was
on the rear bumper of Cain. Mike looked to the high side several
times but each time Cain would fight him off. The battle for the
lead was furious and the top two came together on the front
chute with both scrambling to regain control. Prochnow was able
to correct his car first and he took over the lead but Cain
fought right back on him.
Suddenly a
new player entered the scene as Ashley Anderson had gradually
been moving forward and while the top two battled, he took
advantage to close on both of them as the race suddenly became a
three car scramble. With just a couple of laps left, Prochnow
got hung up in traffic and Anderson was right there to dive
under him and take over the lead. The surprising turn of events
saw Anderson then hold on for his third Late Model win of the
year here, tops in the division. Prochnow and Cain followed with
John Kaanta making a late rush into fourth ahead of Mahder.
Keller
earned his second straight Super Stock feature win as he came
from the fourth row to fight off a tough field of competitors
for the win. The action was hot and heavy early as the lead pack
ran in tight formation with drivers scrambling to find the
openings they needed. Rookie driver Lance Schilling continued to
show improvement as he led the opening few laps under intense
pressure from a pack of about six cars jockeying behind him.
When he got loose in turn four however, it was Keller that found
the opening to slip into the lead as Jason Forehand, Tom Karis,
Shane Kisling and Steve Thomas all jockeyed behind him. Forehand
was able to work his way into second and fought off Karis to
take the second spot as everyone chased Keller home for the win.
Thomas settled for fourth ahead of Kisling at the finish.
Gerth got
his first Midwest Modified win here as he went to the high side
to pull off a daring pass into the lead which he then maintained
the rest of the way. There was a wild scramble going on for the
lead when Gerth went sailing to the top of the track and roared
by everyone out of turn two to take over the lead. Mike Anderson
also went to the high side as he battled with Jim Bourn for
second. Anderson was able to fight off Bourn and take a run at
Gerth but Mark was clearly in the groove and there would be no
catching him on this night. Mark Thomas made another of his
patented charges through the field as he started sixteenth on
the grid and worked his way into fourth at the finish and only
the fact that he ran out of laps ended his charge with Shane
Halopka completing the top five.
Next
Friday night, June 12th is the Miller Lite Midseason
Championship race. The drivers will be lined up for their heat
races by points earned so far this season and will qualify for
the feature events based on their heat race finishes. Race time
is 7 p.m.
