Menomonie WI, June 10 – Zach Manley won his first ever WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature race on a rain shortened Friday night at the Red Cedar Speedway. When the rains increased in intensity following the Midwest Modified main, the rest of the program had to be cancelled with the remaining feature races to be made up in the next two weeks.
A big field of twenty three Midwest Modifieds took the green flag from Rick Cook for their main event with Manley jumping into the early lead off the outside pole. However, before a lap could be completed a multi car tangle occurred in turn two and the race went yellow.
The second attempt went better, and Manley again took the lead with A.J. Roschen chasing him. The pack soon began to tighten up with Nick Koehler, Jordan Hessler, Matt Leer and Travis Anderson soon becoming one large group of cars jockeying for position. Manley continued to maintain a comfortable cushion but the battle for second and beyond was heavy.
Another yellow for a spin on lap six bunched the field again, but Manley was equal to the task as he again put distance on the pack. Leer was on the move and he drove into the second spot while Cory Crapser, who was sent to the tail on the first lap tangle, had already worked his way back up into the top five. Crapser continued to charge as he got under both Anderson and Koehler to move into third.
The last nine laps of the event proved to be a shootout, and while Leer challenged Manley a few times, Zach held his ground and didn’t give Leer the opening he needed and the former Street Stock standout drove home for his first open wheel win ever. Leer finished a solid second with Crapser, Koehler and Roschen trailing.
Next Friday, June 17th, with be Snap 0n Tools and Quality Auto night at the speedway and it will be a busy one. A full program will be staged for the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds along with the Red Cedar Pure Stocks. In addition, the makeup feature races from tonight’s weather out will be held for the Modifieds, Super Stocks and Pure Stocks.
The Late Models are scheduled to be off next Friday night and they will return on June 24th, WQOW TV 18 night, when they will run their makeup feature event.
